The Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) of the National Capital Region (NCR) together with Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Mila Federizo and Nutrition Officer I Bea Menorca of NNC-NCR visited the Cities of Vigan and Laoag in the Province of Ilocos for their annual Technical Exchange and Team Building held on January 24-27, 2017.
Being a former Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) that also produced a Regional Outstanding BNS in 2015, the City of Vigan was chosen to be this year’s venue for the BNS Federation’s Technical Exchange. The activity aimed to enable the participants to identify good nutrition practices or projects that they can most likely adopt in their respective barangays.
The group met the city nutrition committee led by Mayor Juan Carlo Medina. During the courtesy call, the BNSs were inspired from Mayor Medina’s message, “Being a Mayor is very difficult. Time for yourself, friends and family will always be insufficient. You sacrifice these things for the sake of the people in most need.”
After discussing the nutrition programs and good practices of their city, City Nutrition Program Coordinator Mylene Amano accompanied the group to Barangays Ayusan Norte and Paoa to observe their good practices on nutrition program management. They were welcomed by the Barangay Nutrition Committees led by the Barangay Captains. The group was oriented on the nutrition programs and innovative projects in the barangay by BNS Anaryll Adriatico of Ayusan Norte and BNS Dolores Amorin of Paoa. Ms. Adriatico was a 2014 National Outstanding BNS finalist while Ms. Amorin was awarded as the 2015 Regional Outstanding BNS.
The theme for this year’s team building activity was “Umay tayo idiay (Let’s go to) Ilocos BNS: Born for Nutrition and Service”. The group participated in group dynamics to foster camaraderie by getting them acquainted or reacquainted with each other and with their own self and enhance team work among them.
The group was inspired by the learnings and experiences they had during their stay in Ilocos. But most of all, their dedication and passion to serve were deepened. They reaffirmed their commitment to serve their respective barangays to the fullest and strive harder to help improve the nutrition situation of the communities that they serve.
