Twenty two (22) local government units (LGUs) and the 2012 National Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar will be honored during the 2013 National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony on 5 November 2013 at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City. NNC Governing Board Chair Enrique T. Ona will be the keynote speaker and will hand over the awards together with the NNC Executive Director Assistant Secretary of Health Maria-Bernardita T. Flores. 

LGUs will be conferred with the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition or CROWN Award, CROWN Maintenance Award and the Nutrition Honor Award. These awards are presented to LGUs that have consistently shown excellent implementation of their local nutrition programs and reduction in the prevalence of undernutrition for three consecutive years for CROWN holders, and sustained this performance for the first and second year for the CROWN maintenance awardees. The Nutrition Honor Award, on the other hand, is awarded to an LGU that has increasingly improved further its outstanding performance and held the record in the region for six (6) consecutive years. This year’s National Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (NOBNS) will  be recognized for besting the more than 39,000 BNSs all over the country.


Twelve LGUs that will receive the CROWN award are the provinces of Misamis Oriental and Davao del Norte; cities of Cauayan in Isabela,Valencia in Bukidnon, Mandaluyong in Metro Manila and Bislig in Surigao del Sur; and the municipalities of Paombong in Bulacan, Mogpog in Marinduque, Gubat in Sorsogon, Jordan in  Guimaras, Jagna in Bohol, and New Corella in  Davao del Norte. These LGUs, in the last three years, have been the consistent outstanding LGUs in their respective regions. 

The First Year CROWN Maintenance Award will be presented to the province of Quirino, cities of Vigan in Ilocos Sur, Tarlac in Tarlac, and Toledo in Cebu; and the municipality of Polanco, in Zamboanga del Norte for having garnered a score of at least 90%. The Second Year CROWN Maintenance Award will be presented to the province of Ifugao, Maasin City in Southern Leyte and municipality of Lal-lo in Cagayan for having garnered a score of at least 95%. The CROWN Maintenance Award is given to the CROWN awardees that have been able to maintain and exceed their performance in nutrition program implementation. 

The municipality of Tubigon in Bohol and Ozamiz City in Misamis Occidental top the LGUs by garnering the Nutrition Honor Award, the most prestigious award in nutrition conferred by the National Nutrition Council .  These areas have garnered a score of at least 98%. 

For this year, aside from a trophy or plaque, CROWN Awardees will each receive P500,000, First Year CROWN Maintenance Awardees P100,000 each, Second Year CROWN Maintenance Awardees P200,000 each, and the Nutrition Honor Awardees P1,000,000 each.  The cash awards shall be used by LGUs to further enhance the implementation of their nutrition programs. 

BNS Felisa J. Guilingan of Barangay Guinles, Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte is the 2012 National Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar. Meanwhile, BNS Dorothy P. Felipe of Barangay North Poblacion, Maramag, Bukidnon is the  first runner-up and BNS Sherwin C. Abellaniza of Barangay Magugpo East, Tagum City and Ms. Josephine R. Balingit of Barangay Devilla, Sta. Cruz, Marinduque tied for second runner-up. 

Aside from the trophy, the NOBNS will receive cash award in the amount of Php150,000; the first runner-up Php100,000 and for the second runner-up, Php80,000.  

The NNC annually conducts the awarding ceremony to recognize the efforts of local governments and the nutrition volunteer workers  for their contribution and excellent performance in improving the nutrition situation in their areas.
