For FB posting18-19 November 2021--The Regional Nutrition Committee of Region 1 successfully spearheaded the Regional Dialogue with Punong Barangays which was held via zoom and facebook live attended by more than 2,400 participants comprised of Punong Barangays, Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), Sangguniang Kabataan Chairpersons, and other Barangay Nutrition Committee (BNC) members.

The dialogue aims to encourage the barangay stakeholders particularly the Barangay Chairpersons to be aware on the importance of increasing investment on nutrition.

NNC’s Executive Director, Assistant Secretary Azucena Dayanghirang on her message recognized the vital roles of Barangay Captains in realizing the PPAN targets and enjoined them to lead the Barangay Nutrition Committee in crafting their Barangay Nutrition Action Plans aligned to PPAN to help end all forms of malnutrition in every barangay.

“If we improve the nutrition of our people, we also give hope to our children to be empowered, improve their intelligence and social adaptation to have better lives,” she added. 

Mr. Kendall Pilgrim A. Gatan, OIC-Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC1 then presented the overview of the Usapang PPAN sa Barangay: Programang Pang Nutrsiyon, Gawing Mahusay where he focused on the programs of PPAN to be aligned in crafting the Barangay Nutrition Action Plan. He also highlighted the roles and responsibilities of Barangay Nutrition Committee in the implementation and management of local nutrition programs.

Ms. Elizabeth Madrid of DBM1 on the other hand presented how the barangay LGUs will further increase budget allotted for nutrition programs relative to the mandanas ruling.

During the dialogue, Hon. Jojie Jimenez, Barangay Captain of Poblacion, Ilocos Norte; Kap Ignacio Tadeo of Barangay Ayusan, Vigan City and BNS Aurelia Aguilar of Oaqui 3, Luna, La Union served as panelists and shared their best practices in managing their nutrition programs emphasizing the opportunities brought the mandanas ruling to further scale-up their nutrition investments.

The two barangay captains also shared their plan of actions and ways forward as results of the workshop where Ms. Helen Joy Bugaling of NNC1 commended their accomplishments that are worth replicating by other barangay leaders.

Likewise, Ms. Reygee Rocero, Acting President of League of Nutrition Action Officers of Region 1; Ms. Amelita Dahuya, President of LUPangIlocos BNS Federation, and Mr. Lemuel Gio Cayabyab, Sangguniang Kabataan Chairman from San Carlos City expressed their full support to the said dialogue and strongly agree for the barangay captains to step-up in the barangay’s nutrition actions. They also expressed the full support of their groups in assisting the barangays.

NNC1 OIC Gatan delivered the closing message of Director Valeriano Jesus V. Lopez, Regional Director of Department of Health Region 1and also the RNC Chairperson and reiterated that the dialogue should also be put into productive learnings and decisions as support in the local devolution to have a better and responsive grasp to all the programs of PPAN.

He also encouraged everyone to roll sleeves and deliver the needs of all the constituents at the local government units to achieve better nutrition program implementation.

It was indeed a fruitful 2-day dialogue with the strong participation of the DILG and DBM. Director Julie Daquioag of DILG and Director Ria Bansigan of DBM also expressed their full support in all the efforts of addressing malnutrition in the region and in every community. /HJAB
