CITY OF ILAGAN, ISABELA---- Department of Health – Center for Health Development Region 02 and National Nutrition Council Region 02 teamed up in the recently concluded online training on Nutrition in Emergencies (NIEm) Batch Two last 8-10 September 2021 via Webex online platform.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Val-Aaron Taguinin, Nurse III-DOH R02, acknowledged the efforts of the LGUs who attended the training despite the ongoing COVID-19 response and vaccination activities in their locality.

“We are very glad and appreciative of your attendance in today’s training. It only shows the dedication and commitment of public health workers, supporters and advocates in ensuring a safe, adoptive and disaster-resilient communities,” shared by Nurse Taguinin.

The first day of the online training focused on Module 1:  Overview of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) facilitated by Ms. Gillian Faye D. Olivar, ND 2 of DOH R02 followed by the Cluster Approach in the DRRM and Nutrition Cluster at the national and local level shared by Ms. Maria Gisela M. Lonzaga, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator-NNC R02. Furthermore, the Module 2 covered the following topics – Introduction to Nutrition in Emergencies was discussed by Ms. Frances Vea Valdez, NO II- NNC R02, Mr. John Nestor Ballad, NO II-NNC R02, discussed topic about importance of Nutrition in Emergencies and Ms. Veronica Angel Subido, ND-CVMC, presented nutrition assessment. ND Mabbayad continued Module 2 and discussed the Nutrition in Emergencies Interventions specifically about Infant and Young Child Feeding During Emergencies (IYCF-E), Micronutrient supplementation and Philippine Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (PIMAM) while NO III Arcinue on Dietary Supplementation to conclude the day two of the online training.

The day three of the online training focused on the Module 3: Disaster Risk Reduction and Management – Health – Nutrition in Emergencies wherein participants were taught on how to draft their Nutrition in Emergencies plan. This session was facilitated by NO III Arcinue, NO II Valdez and NO II John Nestor Ballad.

In her closing remarks, RNPC Lonzaga congratulated the participants for finishing the three-day online training and she hoped for the LGUs to formulate their NIE plan to ensure nutrition programs even during emergencies. She also emphasized that the increase in the National Tax Allocation of LGUs due to the Mandanas ruling is an opportunity for LGUs to fund nutrition programs, projects, and activities.

“Congratulations for finishing the three-day training. We are very happy that the DOH led this NIEm training to ensure that all LGUs will organize/reorganize and strengthen Nutrition Cluster and formulate their NIE plan to be integrated in the DRRM-H plan and Local Nutrition Action Plan of their respective locality,” happily stated by RNPC Lonzaga.

A total of 80 participants attended the training and the NNC and DOH R02 hopes to receive the finalized plan within September to ensure that all LGUs will have their DRRM-H-NIE plan. – John Nestor L. Ballad
