Abc of good governance

By: Benjie De Yro

By July 1 this year, new players will be fielded in the game of good governance. As to whether they will win or lose will depend on how they perceived their roles to be.

Good governance as defined by the World Bank is the manner it is exercised in the management of a country’s economic and social resources for development while governance are the traditions and institutions by which an authority in a country is exercised.

On top of all these visions and missions of local government units in the country is the basic of all basics in governance; health. Ergo, nutrition.

Nobel Peace Prize winner and former South African President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela said ‘all governments are seeking effective and sustainable means to implement good nutrition’.

National Hypertension Awareness Month is celebrated annually in May by virtue of Proclamation No. 1761 signed on May 1, 2009. The goal of this celebration is to raise awareness about high blood pressure and to be more educated on its signs and symptoms and risk factors.

High blood pressure, commonly known as hypertension is a health condition wherein the blood pressure of a person is higher than the normal (120/80). Common factors that may lead to hypertension include unhealthy food choices and lack of physical activity. Data shows that the prevalence of hypertension among Filipino adults ages 20 years and above is increasing significantly every year (FNRI, 2021).
