Lal-lo, Cagayan- The Municipality of Lal-lo, with the leadership of Mayor Florante C. Pascual, continuously maintains and promotes its health and nutrition programs and projects even after winning the National Honor Award.

For this year, two of the main activities of the Local Government Unit, in partnership with the Rural Improvement Club (RIC), headed by Board Member Maria Olivia B. Pascual, are the School Canteen Visit and the Citronella Planting and Propagation.

School Canteen Visit

Due to the alarming news on food poisoning in some parts of the country, Lal-lo deemed it necessary to repel the happening of the same in the town. As such, the RIC visited the school canteens around the town in order to ensure that every food product in the canteens is safe and nutritious for the children.

During the visit, the RIC checked the safekeeping and sanitary conditions of the canteens. They likewise checked the products and where they are coming from.

“If we want to invest the good future in the hands of our children, then we should start by feeding them only the right ones. More than the quality education our schools can provide, safe and nutritious food is even more important,” said BM Olive.

ro2 lead fitter healthier cvTUGUEGARAO CITY, CAGAYAN- To address the increasing number of obesity in the country, the National Nutrition Council (NNC R-02) commenced its annual celebration of Nutrition Month this July first with a theme “Tamang timbang iwasto sa tamang nutrisyon at ehersisyo.”

As stated by the Assistant Secretary of Health and NNC Executive Director Maria-Bernardita T. Flores, there is an increase of overweight cases among adults aged 20 years old and above which climbed up to 15.5 % from 1993 to 2013.

The National Nutrition Council R02 headed by their Nutrition Program Coordinator Rhodora Maestre, initiated a Zumba dance in their celebration of nutrition month as their response in addressing the pressing problem of obesity. Zumba Dance started at 8 o’clock in the morning at Department of Agriculture Gymnasium, Nursery Compound Bagay Road that lasted an hour.

Regional Directors from regional agencies including Cagayan Valley Association of Career Executives (CVACE) and Regional Nutrition Council together with their members participated in promoting this year’s nutrition month celebration theme. A total of 215 members of the agencies attended the said activity.

ro2 support to gourmixThe National Nutrition Council Region 2 demonstrated its support in the use of Gourmix as a supplementary, complementary and food relief during calamities through a signed resolution on July 1, 2015 as part of the national nutrition month celebration.

Resolution no. 4 series of 2015 is a resolution endorsing and supporting the Gourmix as supplementary, complementary and food relief during calamities. This resolution created convergence among different government agencies in the region.

Pinoy Gourmix is a product developed by the Department of Agriculture R02 as a response in combating malnutrition. This product is a complete and smart food which has high nutritional value. Hence, NNC R02 recognized its potential in addressing malnutrition problems.

Rhodora Maestre, Nutrition Program Coordinator, attested in her speech that Gourmix is indeed a nutritious food. In addition, she also said that everyone can avail smart food for a cheaper price. Thus, giving her full support to the use of Gourmix.

The signing of the resolution gained full support from Lucrecio Alviar Jr., DA-R02 Executive Regional Director and Mary Anne Darauay, CVACE President and witnessed by the members of balay ni ifan media group.

With this simple start, NNC-R02 strongly believe that with the support and trust of different government agencies in their advocacy at the same time with the intervention of Pinoy Smart Food, combating malnutrition will be an easy task.

Nutrition plays a more vital part in life of people in times of emergencies and calamities

This situation inspired the Department of Health Regional Office 02 (DOH-R02) specifically thru the Health Emergency Management Staff (HEMS) to tap the expertise of National Nutrition Council (NNC-R02) in organizing the recently held Nutrition in Emergencies Training last May 26-29 at Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

In order to push through this event, head agency invited different Nutrition Action Officer coming from various priority municipalities in the region. The participants were composed of all twenty (20) municipalities of Cagayan, ten (10) are from Isabela (Dinapigue, Divilacan, Ilagan, Maconacon, Palanan, Cauayan, Jones, Ilagan, Santiago and Sta. Maria) while five (5) municipalities are from Nueva Vizcaya (Alfonso Castaneda, Ambaguio, Bayabag, Kayapa and Sta. Fe). In addition, the remaining participants came from Quirino Province (Aglipay, Cabarrougis, Diffun, Maddela, Nagtipunan, Saguday).

With its core objective, to lessen mortality rate during disasters and calamities by ensuring that the communities are prepared and nutritional needs of people are adequate during those times. The five day seminar jump start by providing each participant a background about the over-all view of National Disaster Risk Reduction Management System which includes its framework, national policies, and directives.

Mayor and Municipal Nutrition Committee Chair Liwayway DC Caramat of Nueva, Vizcaya has attended the National Conference of Regional Bantay Asin Task Forces last January 22-23, 2015 at Bayview Park Hotel, Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

The Santa Fe Bantay Asin Checkpoint is one of the good practices of the Regional Bantay Asin Task Force of Cagayan Valley. Mayor Caramat shared her presentation on relevant and appropriate salt iodization initiatives with the topic “Active LGU Involvement in Salt Checkpoint: The Case of Santa Fe, Nueva Vizcaya”.

Mayor Caramat presented the situation of Cagayan Valley Region in 1998 in terms of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) that challenged Region 02 to organize the Regional Bantay Asin Task Force and establish the Bantay Asin Checkpoint as an initiative to regulate the entry of non-iodized salt in the region and eliminate the occurrence of Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) in Cagayan Valley. Mayor Caramat further presented the continuing efforts and initiatives implemented by the Regional Bantay Asin Task Force with the support of the National Nutrition Council-Region 02, Local Government Unit of Santa Fe, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)-Philippines and other stakeholders.

ro2 nutri kalesa painting contestTUGUEGARAO CITY, CAGAYAN- With the aim of National Nutrition Council (NNC) R02 to promote healthy living, NNC conducted Nutri-kalesa painting contest prior to the celebration of Nutrition Month last June 30 as a way for students to express their insights about nutrition.

The value of kalesa or a horse drawn-rig as an IEC medium of promoting good health in the city is duly recognized through the said activity. Too, the event also provided an avenue for students to showcase their artistic skills while taking their part in encouraging the people to live a healthy life.

Nutri-kalesa painting was participated by 11 kalesas and different students coming from different schools. 4 kalesas were assigned to students of Linao National High School, 6 for Cagayan National High School students and 1 kalesa assigned to Tuguegarao Science High School students.

The theme of the painting contest was based on how the students visualize the 10 Kumainments launched by NNC. Students started to do their tasks on June 29 at PDRMO Cagan Office SIADP.
