Fourteen (14) participants completed the four day Training of Trainers on the Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) held on September 6-9 at Makati Palace Hotel, Makati City. The participants consist of newly designated Nutrition Action Officers, Rural Health Midwives, Social Welfare Development Officer, Municipal Health Staff and RN Heals Manager from the provinces and cities of MIMAROPA. Three members of Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team attended as well.
The Training was facilitated by District Nutrition Program Coordinator (DNPC) of Oriental Mindoro, Ms. Ana Lualhati Hernandez; Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) of Palawan Province, Ms. Rachel T. Paladan; and Health and Education Promotion Officer II of Quezon Province, Ms. Milagros Flavier. NO III Hannah Christina P. Clemente served as the training supervisor while NO I Francis Erik P. Bacena and NO I Ghelvin Auriele C. Aguirre acted as secretariat.
OIC-RNPC Carina Z. Santiago welcomed the participants and gave a brief overview of the training which aimed to enhance the capacities of nutrition workers particularly in training and supervising BNSes for the effective performance of their roles and functions. OIC Santiago encouraged the participants to maximize the opportunity to express their thoughts, opinions, and queries especially in mentoring of BNSs as the facilitators were highly knowledgeable on the topics, and for them to be fully equipped as trainer-supervisors when they return to their localities.
The participants remarked that through the training, they realized the importance of Barangay Nutrition Scholars as the front line nutrition service providers and source of baseline data in assessing the nutrition situation of their respective barangays. One of the participants commented, "I learned a lot on what are the main functions of BNS in the barangay, all the skills they should possess and there was a clear explanation of each topics in all sessions provided".
NNC MIMAROPA hopes that the new batch of BNS Trainers will boost the skills of BNSs in the region in coordinating the formulation of nutrition action plans and efficiently monitoring the nutritional status of their respective barangays.
