The National Nutrition Council – MIMAROPA Region conducted the first leg of the online Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) Provincial Association Meeting joined by participants from the province of Marinduque last 28 August 2020 via Google Meet Application.

Discussed during the meeting were guidelines on milk donation during emergencies, FAQs on breastfeeding during COVID-19 for health workers, report on SAM and MAM cases per municipality, Regional Nutrition Committee Resolution No. 1, s. 2020, status of FBNS member contributions and funds, and sharing of activities for September to December 2020. Select participants also talked about some of their good practices and experiences during COVID-19 response and 2020 Nutrition Month activities.

RDC Full Council

The Regional Development Council (RDC) MIMAROPA, chaired by Romblon Province Governor Jose R. Riano, approved on Friday, 4 September 2020, the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) Resolution No. 1, s. 2020, which seeks support to request all local government units in the region to provide healthy and nutritious food packs during disasters, calamities, and public health emergencies.

The presentation of the RNC Resolution was part of the agenda of the Third Quarter Regional Development Council (RDC) Full Council Meeting held via Zoom application, with National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) as Secretariat. The online meeting was attended by approximately 110 participants representing various regional government agencies, local government units, and development partners.  

Regional Social Development Committee Marvi Trudeau discussed the Resolution’s salient points, highlighting its significance to help protect and promote local economy through patronizing fresh produce directly from small farmers, fisherfolks and cooperatives within the community and ultimately, to help meet nutritional needs of people especially those belonging to at-risk groups including infants, young children, pregnant and lactating women, elderly, and indigenous groups during times of emergencies.

Quezon City – NNC MIMAROPA trained LGUs of Occidental Mindoro on the use of the Early Childhood Care and Development in the First 1000 Days (ECCD F1K) Reporting System last 29-30 July 2020 through Google Meet.

ECCD-F1K Reporting System was developed by NNC to automate reporting progress of ECCD interventions at the LGU level. The system will be used to facilitate reporting and reduce nutrition workers’ workload in terms of recording, as well as lessen paper-based forms. In times of pandemic, online submission also prevents the spread of virus due to lesser physical contact.

Quezon City –  Representatives from Occidental Mindoro bagged both Poster Making Contest and Makatang BNS: Tula para sa Nutrisyon Poem Writing Contest organized by National Nutrition Council - MIMAROPA in celebration of 2020 Nutrition Month with the theme, Batang Pinoy, Sana Tall… Iwas Stunting, Sama All! Iwas all din sa COVID-19!.

Contests were held simultaneously last 9 July 2020 across the region in coordination with the Provincial/City/Municipal Nutrition Action Officers and District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators. Deliberation of scores among the judges were held 3 August 2020, and winners were announced on NNC MIMAROPA’s Facebook page the next day.

With this, the practice of breastfeeding is considered as one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival. However, when COVID-19 surfaced, the practice of breastfeeding was challenged. Concerns have been raised, with the most common question being: Can COVID-19 be passed through breastfeeding?
