National Nutrition Council MIMAROPA Region conducted its first ever Nutrition Sharing Session via Facebook live. The back-to-back activity featured discussions on stunting as the 2020 Nutrition Month theme and also served as a prelude for the Breastfeeding Awareness Month this August.

Nutrition Program Coordinator Ms. Ma. Eileen Bringas - Blanco gave a welcome message, enjoining all online followers and viewers to engage and participate in the online discussions and games in between.

During the first part of the discussion, NNC MIMAROPA staff provided an introduction on NNC’s mandate and on the history of Nutrition Month celebrations in the country. Presidential Decree 491 (Nutrition Act of the Philippines) mandated on 25 June 1974 institutionalized the creation of the National Nutrition Council as the country’s highest policy-making and coordinating body on nutrition. PD 491 also declared July as Nutrition Month to create greater awareness on the importance of nutrition among Filipinos.

Palawan -- This pandemic season, the government is giving utmost priority to the health of all Filipino families especially those who are nutritionally at-risk. The Department of Health (DOH) through the National Nutrition Council (NNC) has provided Ready-to-Use Supplementary Food (RUSF) to reach those vulnerable in Palawan province.

RUSF is given to 6-59 months old children who are diagnosed with Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and to pregnant and lactating women who are nutritionally at-risk and energy-deficient. 

ARTICLE BANNER NM VIRTUAL PRESSER QUEZON CITY --- While usual activities came to a halt due to the COVID-19 outbreak, adapting to the “new normal” became a challenge for most. Thanks to technology and the advent of online conferencing, NNC MIMAROPA’s first online digital Nutrition Month Launching became possible on 1 July 2020, with the support of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) – MIMAROPA headed by Director Jose Reuben Q. Alagaran II. It was streamed simultaneously on PIA MIMAROPA and NNC MIMAROPA’s official Facebook accounts.

Nutrition Month is celebrated every July by virtue of Presidential Decree 491, also known as Nutrition Act of the Philippines, to create greater awareness among Filipino people on the importance of nutrition. Each year, a theme is selected to focus on the most pressing issues affecting the Filipino citizenry. This year’s theme “Batang Pinoy, SANA TALL… Iwas Stunting, SAMA ALL! Iwas ALL din sa COVID-19”, expresses the aspiration of Filipino families to have children who are able to achieve their fullest potential. The sub-message on COVID-19 is added to pay attention to the pandemic and quarantine still in effect.

QUEZON CITY – Selected members of MIMAROPA provincial and city nutrition committees showcased their artistic skills in NNC’s Regional Nutrition Month Poster making contest held on 9 July 2020. The activity aimed to utilize painting to increase stakeholders’ awareness about the Nutrition Month theme focus -- stunting. The contest started at 8:30 in the morning and was held at the nutrition offices facilitated by their Local Nutrition Action Officers and District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators.

The COVID-19 pandemic made a major change in our everyday lives. From the implementation of Community Quarantine to the New Normal, people are more cautious to distance themselves to prevent infection of the virus. COVID 19 has affected the lives of every Filipino, business operations and delivery of various government services.

For the Early Childhood Care and Development in the First 1000 of days program (ECCD-F1K), nutrition education classes and bidding processes were deferred as social gathering were prohibited and most businesses were unavailable during lockdown. In these changing times, NNC MIMAROPA continue to adapt in delivering nutrition programs and services in accordance to quarantine measures.

Relative to this, NNC MIMAROPA convened the Nutrition Action Officers of Occidental Mindoro for its first virtual meeting last June 9, 2020 to discuss the status of ECCD-F1K program and strategize for the resumption of COVID-19 deferred activities. The Virtual Meeting was presided by NPC-OIC Ma. Eileen B. Blanco and attended by nine (9) out of eleven (11) Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAO) of Occidental Mindoro.

Poem contest bannerQUEZON CITY – As part of regional activities for the 46th Nutrition Month  celebration, NNC MIMAROPA, through the assistance of Region IV-B Provincial/City Nutrition Action Officers (P/CNAOs), joined forces to conduct Makatang BNS: Tula para sa Nutrisyon – a poem writing contest for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs). The activity aimed to utilize poetry to create awareness on stunting and the first 1000 days, and to promote the importance of nutrition in the prevention of stunting among pre-school children.
