Breastmilk is the most complete food for infants containing all the nutrients and energy they need in the first six months of life. It is also easily digested and is readily available. World Health Organization recommended initiating breastfeeding at the first hour after birth. Breastfeeding should be done exclusively (no other fluids/foods including water are given) in the first six months of life and should continue until two years and beyond complemented with safe, appropriate and nutritionally adequate foods starting in the sixth month. Breastmilk contains antibodies that help babies fight off viruses and bacteria.

Quezon City – MIMAROPA Region with its geographical location is generally prone to natural emergencies such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tropical cyclones and floods. Food insecurity is more likely to occur during disasters, calamities and public health emergencies such as the unforeseen coming of pandemic COVID-19.
With the COVID – 19 pandemic, and with the implementation of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), the supply chain across the region is affected since households’ access to goods and services are significantly limited. Food supply, health and nutrition of individuals are affected due to the limited access and availability of nutritious foods. Many people are trying different kinds of diet because of the influence of social media and for the reason to get fit or to have a summer body in a wink of an eye. These diets are mostly weight loss program diets that will give rapid results. These are considered as Fad Diets with no prescription from doctors or dietitians.
Fad Diets also known as crash diets are dietary regimen that promotes weight loss. Most fad diets today promote low carbohydrate diet which aims to reduce the insulin level in the body. Insulin helps in controlling the sugar level in the blood and stores it in the liver and muscles for future use. In the same way, when the insulin level drops, the amount of stored fat in the body also decreases. This is how mostly fad diet works for the person to lose weight.

Our Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs), well known as community volunteers provide health and nutrition services to households with under five (5) years old, malnourished children, pregnant and lactating women and senior citizens. They are always on the go, rain or shine with a smile conducting house to house visits, providing nutrition counseling to mothers on how to make their children healthy. They painstakingly conduct the eOPT Plus every 1st quarter of the year in order to locate and identify malnourished children.
A BNS plays a very important role in ensuring preschool children ages under five years-old are given nutrition services. Being familiar with the community, a BNS can easily assist health and child daycare workers in providing their services to their beneficiaries as well as identifying families in dire need of assistance. In times where lactating mothers are having difficulties in breastfeeding due to the stress caused by COVID-19, BNS are always ready to assist and encourage mothers to continue breastfeeding and promote complementary feeding practices.
