The deployment of a Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) in every barangay is pursuant to the Presidential Decree No. 1569 (1979). They monitor the nutritional status of children and other nutritionally at-risk groups and link them with nutrition and nutrition-related service providers. With all the responsibilities of a BNS, they are entitled to receive some incentives like monthly travelling allowance from the National Nutrition Council (NNC).

According to the World Health Organization, “Processed meat refers to meat that has been transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavor or improve preservation. Most processed meats contain pork or beef, but processed meats may also contain other red meats, poultry, offal, or meat by-products such as blood. Examples of processed meat include hot dogs (frankfurters), ham, sausages, corned beef, and biltong or beef jerky as well as canned meat and meat-based preparations and sauces.”

BNS Survivorship Assistance How to Apply
The Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) play an important role in monitoring the nutritional status of children and other nutritionally at-risk groups in a community. They are also equipped with enough training in organizing community nutrition activities and disseminating nutrition information in the barangay.

As discussed in the previous articles about the incentives a BNS is entitled to, their beneficiary can also receive a survivorship assistance worth P20,000.00.

Sugar-sweetened beverages are among the popular thirst quenchers for both childrens and adults here in the Philippines. Sugar-sweetened beverage is described by the United States Department of Agriculture as any drink sweetened with added sugars such as brown sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, glucose, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, lactose, malt syrup, maltose, molasses, raw sugar, and sucrose. Regular soda, fruit drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, sweetened waters, and coffee and tea beverages with added sugars are just a few examples. It is one of the sources of added sugar in an individual’s diet. When taken in high amounts can be a risk factor in developing obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and tooth decay.
