Puerto Princesa City - Health Emergencies Management Staff (HEMS) of Department of Health MIMAROPA with the assistance of National Nutrition Council MIMAROPA conducted the training on Nutrition in Emergencies for Palawan and Puerto Princesa City. The training was held at Sunlight Hotel in Puerto Prinsesa City last October 22-24, 2019. Forty five (45) District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, Nutritionist-Dietitians from Hospitals and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officers attended the training.
On the first day, the training started with invocation followed by National Anthem and MiMaRoPa Hymn. Mr. Benedict Basaya, Nurse III of City Health Office, gave his welcome remarks for the attendees. Before the training started, the participants had their pre-test to determine how much they know about nutrition in emergencies. Discussions began with Mr. Arcinue by giving an overview of Nutrition in Emergencies to give the participants an idea about the training. He also conferred the Nutrition Cluster in local government units which intends to ensure the nutritional status of affected population especially the most vulnerable group will not worsen or deteriorate due to the impact of emergency and disaster through linking with other cluster/ sector groups and establishing capacities at all levels. Mr. Patriarca discussed different and simplest nutrition assessment that can be done during the emergency to monitor the nutritional status of the affected population. On the otherhand, Ms. Solidum shared her expertise on Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies. She focuses on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding even in emergencies.
Mr. Timbancaya from CDRRMO started the discussion on the second day of the training. He shares his knowledge on Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Management System. He gave an overview on the nature of the different hazards and vulnerabilities in the country. His discussion was followed by Mr. Arcinue on Micronutrient Supplementation during emergencies and Supplementary Feeding Program by Mr. Patriarca.

Alabang, Muntinlupa - The MiMaRoPa Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony was held at Acacia Hotel in Alabang, Muntinlupa City last 30 September 2019. It was attended by nutrition champions and nutrition stakeholders in the region. The National Nutrition Council-MiMaRoPa and the Regional Nutrition Committee awarded the Local Government Units with outstanding and successful implementation of nutrition programs. Aside from that, nutrition workers were also given due recognition for their dedication in improving the nutrition situation of their communities.
Brgy. Suqui of Calapan City was hailed as the 2018 Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Committee. They were followed by Brgy. Puting Buhangin in Boac, Marinduque and Brgy. Panacan, Narra Palawan for the 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Brgy. Bancao-Bancao, Puerto Princesa City, Brgy. Tabugon, Sta. Fe, Romblon and Brgy. Paclasan, Roxas, Oriental Mindoro were among the finalists for the 2018 Search for ROBNC.
Outstanding municipalities for each province of MiMaRoPa were also recognized during the awarding ceremony. Municipalities of Naujan in Oriental Mindoro, San Jose in Occidental Mindoro, Mogpog in Marinduque, Odiongan in Romblon and San Vicente in Palawan were the municipalities that excelled in nutrition program implementation in their respective provinces.
In lieu of the Green Banner Award, Certificates of Quality Nutrition Program (QNP) were awarded to Marinduque Province, Calapan City and Municipalities of Mogpog, Marinduque and Odiongan, Romblon. QNP is given to LGUs whose nutrition program implementation is on track as proven by their overall accomplishments and compliance to 2018 nutrition standards.

The “Nutrition Champions” from the Municipality of Roxas (Oriental Mindoro) and City of Calapan (Oriental Mindoro) received their National Nutrition Awards, trophies and prizes during the 2019 National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) last August 30, 2019.
Hon. Councilor Ronnel Sescar, Roxas Municipal Administrator and Dr. Leonor Nunez-Daite, Roxas Municipal Health Officer/Municipal Nutrition Action Officer, received their second year Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) award. It is a step-closer to the Nutrition Honor Award, the highest award in nutrition given to LGUs in the country.
The CROWN award was given to the City of Calapan (Oriental Mindoro) and was received by Hon. Mayor Arnan Panaligan, Hon. Council Mylene de Jesus, and Ms. Zipora Manes, City of Calapan Nutrition Action Officer.
The awards were conferred by Dr. Azucena M. Dayanghirang, the newly appointed Executive Director of National Nutrition Council; Hon. Senator Cynthia Villar; Hon. Senator Aquilino Pimentel ; Dr. Roger Tong-An , DOH Undersecretary; and Mr. Karlo Alexei B. Nograles.
Dr. Mario S. Baquilod, CHD MIMAROPA Regional Director; Dr. Matthew Medrano, CHD MIMAROPA Family Health Cluster Head; Ms. Perla Supnet, CHD MIMAROPA Nutritionist-Dietitian; and OIC-Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC MIMAROPA, Ms. Carina Santiago, also graced the event.

The local government of San Fernando, Romblon rolled-out its Nutrition in Emergencies Training last 14 - 16 October 2019 at Rances Resort in Magdiwang, Romblon. The training was attended by all twelve (12) Barangay Nutrition Scholars of San Fernando, Barangay Chairpersons, representatives from Provincial Nutrition Office, members of Municipal Nutrition Committee and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. The training was facilitated by the Municipal Nutrition Action Officer, Ms. Marites Mortel and NO III Edzell M. Arcinue and NO I Bianca Louise Veronica M. Estrella of National Nutrition Council – MiMaRoPa.
Mr. Harley Rolex of MDRRMO presented the emergency management system of the Municipality of San Fernando in preparedness and response to emergencies. He also presented the hazards and risks of the municipality of San Fernando. This is followed by the module on basic principles on how disasters and emergencies affect the nutritional status of individuals by Nutrition Officer III Edzell Arcinue. Furthermore, Nutrition Officer I Bianca Estrella discussed ways to conduct nutritional assessment and its importance while DNPC Merely Bayang explained the significance of infant and young child feeding emphasizing the exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding during emergencies. NO III Arcinue discussed the necessary micronutrient supplementation during disasters and emergencies.
The following day, chosen groups presented the assigned skit about the simple rapid assessment of infant and young child feeding practices in which the scenarios include exclusive breastfeeding, mixed feeding and non-breastfeeding practices of mothers. Right after, the session was continued with the topic on supplementary feeding by NO III Arcinue followed by Nutritionist-Dietitian II Nicole Tansingco about the nutrition interventions to be provided for identified cases of acute malnutrition in emergency affected area. The last session was planning for nutrition and emergency preparedness response plan facilitated by NO III Arcinue. Each barangay and the MNC in partnership with MDRRMO were tasked to draft an NiEm Preparedness and Response Plan based on the inputs they gained from each session. Three barangays were randomly chosen to present their plan.

National Nutrition Council Executive Director, Azucena M. Dayanghirang, awarded seven District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators (D/CNPCs) from MIMAROPA Region during the 7th National Conference of District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators. The awarding ceremony was held in Baguio Country Club last 13-14 August 2019.

The conference was conducted by the National Nutrition Council in partnership with District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators’ Association of the Philippines (D/CNPCAP) to achieve the following 1) update district/city/municipal nutrition program coordinators (D/C/MNPCs) on the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022 and other policies and programs as basis for developing and coordinating local nutrition plans of action; 2) enhance the skills of participants on self-development techniques related to improving their performance as D/C/MNPCs; 3) provide a venue for the conduct of D/CNPCAP general assembly to discuss various concerns of the association; and 4) build and strengthen camaraderie among the delegates through participation in fellowship opportunities. -BVLMEstrella

20 September 2019 - MiMaRoPa Regional Technical Assistance Monitoring and Evaluation (TAME) team for the Early Child Care and Development in the First 1,000 Days (ECCD-F1K) of Life Program was formed during its organization meeting at Microtel Hotel Acropolis, Quezon City.The meeting was attended by members of Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) for Nutrition which comprised of Department of Health, Department of Agriculture, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Agrarian Reform, National Commission of Indigenous People, Rural Improvement Club and Technical Skill and Development Authority. The RTWG or nutrition will serve as members of TAME.
