BNS Presidents Converge to Form a Regional BNS FederationTo create a BNS Federation for the MIMAROPA Region, National Nutrition Council – MIMAROPA organized a meeting last 27 September 2012. It was attended by BNS Presidents of various provinces of MIMAROPA and NNC IV-B technical staff headed by Ms. Ma. Eileen B. Blanco, OIC – RNPC. Ms. Melanie Bantan, BNS President of Puerto Princesa City, was unanimously elected as President of Regional BNS Federation. Ms. Bantan accepted the nomination and gladly assumed the position.

Other elected officers were as follows:

Vice President: Honoria A. Romero of Calapan City and Oriental Mindoro
Secretary: Lorena R. Quizana of Marinduque
Treasurer: Mary Jane M. Rodia of Romblon
Auditor: Tecla C. Borbon of Palawan
PRO: Ms. Jovy T Abeleda of Occidental Mindoro (as represented by Ms. Genie Anna E. Torrente)

The Federation was named “BNS Federation of Region IV-B Inc.”. The group together with NNC – MIMAROPA Secretariat is now working on its SEC registration.

NNC Region IV-B Conducts Local Media Placement PIREurotel, Makati – The National Nutrition Council MIMAROPA Region conducted Local Media Placements Program Implementation Review. It was participated by respective Provincial/ City Nutrition Action Officers, Information Officers, Local Radio Station Managers, and Barangay Nutrition Scholars from different provinces and cities of MIMAROPA Region.


The objectives of the Program Implementation Review are: (1) To review and assess past actions done and identify gaps encountered with regards to local media placements or activities; and (2) to formulate a Local Media Plan for 2013 for each province or city.

Ma. Eileen B. Blanco, OIC – RNPC of NNC IV-B, facilitated the group in creating project proposals and activities in communicating key nutrition messages. The group had a brainstorming of ideas in order to come up with an effective Local Media Plan.

 

ro4b 2012 6th bccl vhw conventionCoron, Palawan – The 6th Volunteer Health Workers Convention was held last 16-18 of May, 2012 in Coron Colisuem with the theme: “Kakayahan Linangin, Kalusugan Pangkalahatan Kamitin”. It was participated by all Volunteer Health Workers (Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Microscopist, Barangay Sanitary Inspector and BEANS or Barangay Environment Agriculture Nutrition Scholars. The Municipal Health Officers of the four municipalities of Busuanga, Coron, Culion, and Linapacan together with their staff were also present on the said activity.


Topics discussed were as follows:

  • BHW By Laws – Dr. Charlie O. Tejada, MHO, Culion

  • Overview on Child Growth Standards and Nutrition Month Theme for 2012 – Mr. Frederich Christian S. Tan, NO II, NNC Region 4
  • The three-day convention was indeed a success and it surely equipped the Volunteer Health Workers of the four municipalities with learning and updates on health and nutrition.

25 September 2012 – The National Nutrition Council Region IV-B organized a meeting with Information Officers from LGUs and Local Radio Station Managers from different provinces and cities of MIMAROPA. The objective is to establish a group of media network that would help in the dissemination of key nutrition messages and promotion of good nutrition in the region.

The group had an election of officers and Mr. Voltaire N. Dequina, Station Manager of Radyo Natin San Jose, was unananimously elected as President. Other elected officers were as follows:

The local media group came up with the name, “PROMO Nutri Com” which means:

P - Palawan

R - Romblon

O - Oriental Mindoro

M - Marinduque

O – Occidental Mindoro

Nutri - Nutrition

Com - Communication

The 2nd meeting of local media group is tentatively scheduled on 26th of November, 2012.

ro4b 2012 romblon bns trainingDream Paradise Mountain Resort, Romblon – The National Nutrition Council Region IV-B provided technical assistance to seven municipalities of Romblon, namely: Alcantara, Cajidiocan, Corcuera, Looc, Romblon, San Fernando, Santa Fe on “Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholar”. The training is designed to equip BNSs on basic knowledge and skills as well as core values and traits that are necessary for them to perform their roles and functions effectively.

Attended by a total of 76 participants – 72 BNSs and 4 MNAOs, Ms. Eileen B. Blanco, OIC-NPC; together with Ms. Jellie Ann C. Palencia and Mr. Frederich Christian S. Tan, both Nutrition Officer II of NNC Region IV-B served as resource speaker and facilitator of the said training.


Discussed in the training were the following:

  1. Legal basis and rationale for the implementation of the BNS program
  2. Relationship of food, diet and nutritional status, as well as the different form of malnutrition, its causes and consequences
  3. Important skills needed to effectively perform their roles and functions
  4. Overall local development system and nutrition program management
  5. Roles and functions of BNS in the context of nutrition program management

Participants were very interactive, receptive and lively throughout the training and mentioned that the training further strengthens their knowledge and skills in nutrition program management. The BNSs who attended the training were very eager to go back in their respective barangays to apply what they have learned during the training.

IHNF of UPLB held Training of Trainers for Oriental Mindoro on the Basic Course of Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs)03 - 07 September 2012 - The Institute of Huma Nutrition & Food (IHNF) of the UPLB College of Human Ecology conducted the Training of Trainers on the Basic Course for BNSs for the province of Oriental Mindoro at Kimberly Hotel in Manila. The 5 days training aims to equip the trainers to further build the capacities of their BNSs and to level the skills and knowledge of all BNSs in the country.

Representatives from Calapan City, 12 Municipalities of Oriental Mindoro, and those from the Provincial Nutrition Office actively participated in the said training. Lecturers discussed the training module in detail while the attendees actively participated in the role-out of activities as BNS participants. The recognition of the heavy task that the BNSs handle as volunteer community workers were very much realized early on.
