The visit is part of the continuous monitoring of nutrition and health situation of the city to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation of typhoon affected areas.

In a dialogue spearheaded by Dr. Martin Parreño, Nutrition Specialist of UNICEF Philippines, the team was able to communicate to the Barangay Health Workers (BHW) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) the need to intensify nutrition data gathering and active case finding of severely and moderately acute malnourished children.

Also, the team was able to orient the BNSs and BHWs on Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) measurement for children and for adults. UNICEF Nutrition Cluster Coordinator Ms. Kristine Angeli Gimongala and NNC-IMO Ms. Love Joy Juntilla demonstrated the proper MUAC measurement taking with the pregnant mothers who were also on-site for their regular prenatal check-up.

MUAC measurement is a rapid assessment of the nutritional status of a child aged 6-59 months and for pregnant women which can be vital especially during emergency situations. Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) is the circumference of the mid-upper arm. It is measured on a straight left arm (in right-handed people) midway between the tip of the shoulder and the tip of the elbow. The MUAC test can identify children between six months and five years old who have malnutrition (wasting or thinness) and are at risk of dying. #RPOchavo
