Pilar lecture by the beachSIARGAO ISLAND – Information Management Officer (IMO) Annievil del Pilar together with the Regional Nutrition Cluster Coordinator, Ms. Kristine Angeli Gimongala facilitated a series of Philippine Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (PIMAM) Crash Course to Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAOs), Rural Health Unit (RHU) Staff and barangay nutrition scholars (BNSs) in the municipalities of Dapa, Santa Monica, San Benito, and Pilar last March 28-31, 2022.

During the training, the need for the proper conduct of nutrition assessment using different anthropometric tools was emphasized. Nutrition interventions and Infant and young child feeding in emergencies were also highlighted. It was the first time to a lot of the participants to see or use the Mid-upper arm circumference tapes as a tool for determining acute malnutrition in both children 6-59 months old and pregnant and lactating women. A return demonstration of proper mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) taking, proper use of child growth standards (CGS) tables was done.
In addition, the basis of the Philippine Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition was also one of the highlights of the training. It was emphasized during the discussions that children who are acute malnourished are not treated as a normal child. Because of the limited time and resources available, implementation using the simplified protocol was focused on. The facilitators also stressed how significant the roles of each person in the RHU and community in addressing the nutritional status of vulnerable groups.

At the end of the training, participants shared that the new knowledge they learned gave them more confidence in executing their roles as health and nutrition service providers. They were also inspired by the practical applications shared by RNCC Gimongala based on her experiences in the different emergencies in the country and verbalized the need for more capacity building in nutrition.

The crash course was attended by 8 MNAOs and 7 BNSs for March 28, 21 Dapa BNSs for March 29, 25 RHU staff of Santa Monica and San Benito for March 30 and 14 RHU staff of Pilar for the March 31 schedules respectively.#APdelPilar
