LNEWS Sna Franz April 4 2022Prosperidad, ADS--Core group of the Local Nutrition Early Warning System (LNEWS) together with the representatives of the five sentinel barangays, Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) Charlaine Ayessa Rubillos and the Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) Laniebelle Angchangco set out plans to increase the food security and diet diversity of each household in the Municipality of San Francisco, Agusan del Sur.

The presentation of the LNEWS results paved way to the interactive discussion among officers involved to improve the results of the next monitoring.

MNAO Rubillos recommended to strengthen the implementation of household backyard gardening with at least five different kinds of vegetables and to continue the advocacy on the importance of first 1000 days.

MSWD Officer Ms. Edendita Batiao proposed that aside from household backyard gardening, the communal garden should be strengthened as well. She also added the mobilization of Bantay-Asin Task Force (BATF) in the municipal and barangay level.

Barangay Kagawad of one sentinel barangays shared that their communal gardens were demolished for road widening project. Currently, they are still looking for a new location to put up a communal garden.
PNAO Angchangco encouraged the Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) to promote the upgrade of the vegetable garden to a food garden especially to the households of malnourished children. The food garden would include cultivation of vegetables, fruits and herbs and growing of domestic animals around homesteads. The primary purpose of this is for domestic consumption and secondarily for additional household income. A help from Agriculture Office was also sought out to further improve food security by distribution of seeds and a short training about food gardening.

The Agriculture focal person, Ms. Charis Umbal shared that their office is planning to establish a plant nursery in every barangay and will distribute planted seeds instead of seeds alone to ensure that seeds will not be put into waste. This action is to strengthen the ordinance entitled Food Always In The Home or FAITH.

The five sentinel barangays identified in the Municipality of San Francisco are Barangay Alegria, Barangay 1, Barangay 5, Barangay Borbon, Barangay Pasta. Barangay Nutrition Committee (BNC) members present were looking forward to use the information gathered from LNEWS-FNS to improve their community and to put the plans discussed into action.
