BNS LadyPril Basibas ADS 2022Recently, during the celebration of the Nutrition Month organized by the Province of Agusan del Sur, Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) LadyPril Basibas was hailed as the Outstanding BNS of the province on 21 July 2022.

The Provincial Outstanding BNS of Agusan del Sur was visited by the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) on 5 September 2022 at Barangay Wasian, Rosario to validate the performance of BNS Basibas for the year 2021.

The active BNS of Barangay Wasian, Ms. Lady Pril V. Basibas, started her journey due to her curiosity on how BNS works in a community. After feeding her curiosity by asking around the Barangay Health Center, it fueled her enthusiasm to help their community through the essence of proper nutrition. With this, she applied and was appointed as the BNS of the said barangay on the month of June of 2019. Her first few months of being the BNS were rough as she is juggling her work and her responsibilities as a mother of two and a good wife to her husband. However, her busy schedules did not stop her from attending several trainings and workshops related to nutrition to fully capacitate herself. Some of the trainings and workshop attended by the BNS are the Local Nutrition Action Planning Workshop, Nutrition Program Management Training and Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars.

Along with BNS Basibas coordination, she was supported by the Barangay Nutrition Committee (BNC) on her programs and activities. Through her efforts, the importance of backyard gardening in each household of Barangay Wasian was introduced. The Barangay Nutrition Committee also helped through provision of seedlings to the families with malnourished children for them to culture.

In her 3 years of providing services as a BNS, she concluded that the most effective nutrition intervention that improved their nutrition situation is the implementation of First 1000 days programs. Included programs that greatly helped the barangay of Wasian were the advocacy on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, provision of multivitamins to children and iron-folic acid to pregnant women and promotion of at least four (4) prenatal visits among pregnant women.

Being a BNS is not an easy feat but the happy smiles of the children during the deliveries of nutrition programs gives her a sense of fulfilment and joy.

As a BNS, she envisioned for a low to zero prevalence of malnourished children and be a legacy that will inspire her co-volunteers.#LCJAbian/MPRayco
