NNC13 HLCADS2019 1July 26, 2019 - NNC Caraga, in coordination with the Provincial Nutrition Office of the Province of Agusan del Sur and in collaboration with the Department of Education – Agusan del Sur Division and Bayugan City Division, and in partnership with the Department of Health – Center for Health Development Caraga, conducted the Healthy Lifestyle Campaign Among Students and Teachers. Anchored to the 2019 Nutrition Month theme which is “Kumain nang wasto at maging aktibo…Push Natin ‘to!”, the healthy lifestyle campaign is a call to action for Filipinos to practice a healthy diet and engage in regular physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviours which go hand in hand. The annual campaign will serve as an avenue to help individuals make informed food choices and be guided on how to integrate physical activity in daily life; jump-start or reinforce nutrition advocacies and policies; and mobilize stakeholders to provide an enabling environment for a healthy diet and physical activity.

Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) of Agusan de Sur, Ms. Laniebelle Angchangco graced the event and gave her message to the participants on behalf of the provincial nutrition council of the province. She emphasized the important role of the students and teachers, as well as school nurses, to become effective advocates of proper nutrition and physical activity and become “pushers” of health and nutrition. A Zumba exercise followed and was enjoyed by the participants before the start of the discussions. The NNC Caraga technical staff led the discussion on the main talking points of the 2019 Nutrition Month. The focus of the talking points is centered on the three key messages of the theme which is to have one hour or more of physical activity each day, reduce screen time to two hours or less per day, and eat the three food groups for variety each day.

Nutritionist-Dietitian II of DOH-CHD Caraga, Ms. Lovely Grace Camancho presented and discussed the Pinggang Pinoy, which is a new, easy to understand food guide that uses a familiar food plate model to convey the right food group proportions on a per-meal basis, to meet the body’s energy and nutrient needs of Filipino adults. Pinggang Pinoy serves as visual tool to help Filipinos adopt healthy eating habits at meal times by delivering effective dietary and healthy lifestyle messages. Ms. Sunshine Alipayo, Nurse V of DOH-CHD Caraga, presented and comprehensively discussed the topic on Non-Communicable Diseases, its causes, the adverse effects, and current efforts on battling NCDs.

In the afternoon, after the presentations and discussions, students, teachers, and school nurses engaged in an interactive open forum and exchange of best practices in their current efforts in health and nutrition. Dr. Susan Marañon, Medical Officer III of Agusan del Sur Schools Division gave the closing remarks, thanking all the participants and organizers of the healthy lifestyle campaign.

NNC13 HLC2019 2July 18, 2019 - NNC Caraga, in cooperation with the Department of Education Caraga and other line agencies, successfully conducted the 2019 Nutrition Month Contests - Nutrition Quiz Bee, Poster-Making Contest, Video Nutri Jingle Contest at Almont Inland Resort, Butuan City as part of the Healthy Lifestyle Campaign during the 2019 Nutrition Month Celebration. As mandated by Presidential Decree No. 491 – the Nutrition Act of the Philippines – the National Nutrition Council (NNC) coordinates the nationwide celebration of Nutrition Month every July in order to increase awareness of the Filipinos on pressing nutrition concerns. This year’s official Nutrition Month theme which is “Kumain nang wasto at maging aktibo…push natin ‘to”. The theme is a call to action for Filipinos to practice a healthy diet and engage in regular physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviours which go hand in hand. This year's participants for the Nutrition Quiz Bee are Grade 3 learners from the different schools division of Caraga Region. Nutrition Quiz Bee Winners: 1st Place - VIC ANDREI HERNANDO (Butuan City Division) 2nd Place - DUANE JON ACUÑA (Agusan del Sur Division) 3rd Place - LEEAM TAGARAO (Agusan del Norte Division). Poster-making contest participants are Junior High School students from the different schools division of Caraga Region. Poster-Making Contest Winners: 1st Place - WINSTON DELA PAZ (Surigao City Division) 2nd Place - CRISTIAN JOREN CAPOY (Butuan City Division) 3rd Place - BRYL GAMAYA (Tandag City Division). 10 high schools in Caraga Region submitted their entries for the Video Nutri-Jingle Contest. Video-Nutri Jingle Contest Winners: 1st Place - Tandag National Science High School, 2nd Place - Agusan National High School, 3rd Place - Caraga Regional Science High School. Dr. Gerna Manatad, OIC Asst. Regional Director of DOH-CHD Caraga gave an inspirational message and thanked all the parents, students, and teacher/advisers who participated to showcase their talent and intellectual skills.

RNAC minDecember 7, 2018, National Nutrition Council Caraga celebrated its annual Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) at Watergate Hotel, Butuan City. It was attended by the members of Regional Nutrition Committee members (RNC), Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG), Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET), LGU Awardees and Nutrition networks including media partners and guest. This annual event is to recognize the Local Government Units(LGUs) with exceptional performance in the implementation on Nutrition Programs, Partner agencies and organizations who gave their support to the nutrition programs in the region.

The event was started with an opening message by Nutrition Officer III Ms. Leah Vina P. Vargas. Ms. Chona Fernandez, Chief Administrative Division of National Nutrition Council delivered her keynote speech and DOH Regional Director and NNC Caraga Nutrition Program Coordinator Director Jose R. Llacuna Jr. MD, MPH, CESO III together with Ms. Melinda Lagua of Department of Interior and Local Government and a member of Caraga Regional Nutrition Committee member joined Ms. Fernandez on stage to present the awards.

Bayugan City and Municipality of San Francisco bagged the 1st year Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Award, this award is given to the local government unit who is consistent in implementing the nutrition program with exemplary performance.

The Municipality of Rosario received a Green Banner Award for being ranked the best Municipality in the region for their exemplary performance in implementing the nutrition programs, followed by the Municipality of Nasipit, Agusan del Norte who ranked 2nd placer for the Green Banner Award, and Municipality of Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte.

Local Chief Executives of Local Government Units with satisfactory performance was also recognized. Surigao del Sur received recognition for having satisfactory performance in implementing Nutrition Programs in provincial level as well as the Local Government Unit of Municipality of Talacogon Agusan del Sur, Municipality of Del Carmen Surigao del Norte, Municipality of Sta. Josefa Agusan del Sur, Municipality of Socorro Surigao del Norte, Tandag City and Surigao City.

The Golden Tara award is given to the Province/Municipality/City who will have the highest percent change and continuous decline of the prevalence rate of malnutrition for the past three years that led to the improvement of nutritional status among preschool children. Golden Tara awardee for provincial level goes to the Province of Surigao del Sur, Butuan City for the city level and Municipality of Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte for the municipal level.

Top-performing Barangay Nutrition Committee was also recognized as well as barangays with a satisfactory performance during the Monitoring and Evaluation on Local Level Plan Implementation.   

The Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) with outstanding performance were also given due recognition. This year’s Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar was from Brgy. Mahayahay, Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte, Ms. Miraflor A. Calacat.

Certificate of appreciation were also given to non-governmental organizations, National Line Agencies and partners, LGUs and few individual who supports the Local Media Activities and Campaign.

DSCF5265 minMarch 20-22, 2019, Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte - NNC Caraga, together with District Nutrition Program Coordinator of Surigao del Norte, Marissa Solloso, went to the Municipality of Del Carmen, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte. The purpose of this visit was to conduct the NSOA Orientation and Nutriskwela Monitoring of DXNG FM 97.7 Radyo Kabakhawan. Municipal Nutrition Action Officer; Gil Bandoy and Radyo Kabakhawan Program Manager, Aljon Judilla accompanied the team.

Surigao State College of Technology – Del Carmen Campus, Director, Dr. Romy Jun Sunico and Radyo Kabakhawan Station Manager, Elwin Argana, welcomed the team. NNC Caraga staff proceeded with the Nutriskwela Monitoring, followed by NSOA Orientation. NNC Caraga also participated in the Digital Literacy Training for the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), barangay secretaries, out-of-school youth, and Alternative Learning System (ALS) teachers and learners.

Nutrition Officer II, Leah Vina P. Vargas gave a message to the BNS participants to continue their hard work and through this training they will be able to package well the nutrition programs in their barangays. Age is not also a barrier to learning specially in serving the community and help improve the nutrition situation of their barangays and the entire municipality. She also appreciated the support given by the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) – Mindanao Cluster 2 and SSCT for choosing BNS as one of the participants of the training. She also recognized the big support the school has given to the nutriskwela station as a partner. Nutrition Officer II, Ivy Sheryl Sablas, discussed and demonstrated the use of eOPT Tool to the BNS participants.

After the activities, the group gave a feedback of the orientation and monitoring to the active and supportive Mayor of Del Carmen, Hon. Alfredo Coro II and he pledged to continue his strong support to the nutrition program and Radyo Kabakhawan.

IMG 20181013 104108 min minOctober 14, 2018 – The National Nutrition Council Caraga in collaboration with the local government of Tandag City and Sure FM conducted the Nutrition School-On-The-Air graduation exercise for the 60 students enrolled in the said program. The aim of the activity is to promote and educate the importance of good nutrition and importance of healthy lifestyle thru the discussion of 10-Kumainments.

The Nutrition School-On-the-Air (NSOA) is a nutrition promotion module developed by the National Nutrition Council followed by the implementing station to create public awareness and adopt good nutrition. It has 12 sessions on 10 Kumainments. There's a Question and Answer portion after every episode to determine the learnings of the students; cellular phone load were given as prizes for the students who were able to answer the question correctly and they were able to claim their prizes during the graduation.

Hon. Imelda C. Falcon, Sangguniang Panlungsod member and Vice chairperson of the committee on health and nutrition welcomed the students during the graduation. And the Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Ms. Ermelinda C. Ascarez shared her inspirational message, and one student shared as her response that thru participating the NSOA she was able to learn good nutrition and the benefits of breastfeeding, which she can also share to her family members, friends and in the community.

At the end of the event the participants were able to receive certificate of completion for participating in the NSOA modules. They were also able to receive NSOA bag, NNC mug, 10-Kumainment fan, NSOA t-shirt and they were able to claim their cellular phone load for those students who texted the correct answer during the quiz conducted every after episode.

IMG 2720 min 1January 29, 2019, Sibagat, Agusan del Sur- NNC Caraga, joined the celebration of DXCN FM 107.3 MHz – Radyo Kaagapay’s 9th Founding Anniversary, held at the Municipal Hall of Sibagat. The Nutriskwela Community Radio Network Program is a project of the National Nutrition Council to address the problem of hunger and malnutrition in the Philippines through the use of radio, the most available form of mass media.
 
The celebration started with a motorcade around the municipality, participated by the members of the LGU, Sibagat Local Nutrition Committee, Senior Citizens and the general public. The Chairman of the Community Radio Council, Ms. Leah Lagat gave the welcome address. NNC Caraga’s Nutrition Officer II Ivy Sheryl Sablas gave her message of gratitude to the LGU of Sibagat and the Community Radio Council for their continuous support and effort in giving information to the public about health, nutrition and the overall progress of Sibagat. In behalf of MNAO Evelyn Mondia, Nutrition Staff Rovelyn Montino reported the Nutritional Status of the municipality. Sibagat Mayor, Hon. Maria Liza L. Evangelista and SB Member Mr. Felipe Mabasle also gave an inspirational message to the participants of the event.
One way of showing their appreciation to their avid listeners, Radyo Kaagapay and LGU Sibagat, raffled out soaps, AC/DC Radios and umbrellas to the lucky participants of their LGU, Senior Citizens and general public. Radyo Kaagapay’s Station Manager, Ms. Elizabeth M. Badajos, gave the closing remarks, thanking all of the participants for joining the celebration.
