Nutriskwela RefresherThe NNC 13 participated the 2017 Refresher Training Course on Nutriskwela Community Radio last June 6-8, 2017 at Radyo Kaagapay, DXCN-FM 99.1 MHz in Sibagat, Agusan del Sur. Through the efforts of National Nutrition Council and the Local Government Unit of Sibagat in partnership with the MQ Media Zone, the training aims to capacitate the participants on how to deliver the news efficiently and empower the community through dissemination of correct, relevant and up-to-date nutrition and health information. The training was participated by the members of the Community Radio Council, students, educators, government sectors and the stakeholders of the Local Government Unit of Sibagat, Agusan del Sur. This 3-day training was covered with lectures and interactive discussions, writing of news plugs, introduction of broadcasting tools, enhancement of broadcasting skills and group presentations facilitated by MQ Mediazone Productions, NNC’s media partner led by Ms. Mackay Quadra, Mr. Mario Garcia, Mr. Francis “Kiko” Flores and Mr. Andy Vital.

NNC 13- NO III Leah Vina P. Vargas, RN MN attended as one of the resource speakers and discussed the overview of Nutriskwela Community Radio and its importance in advocating nutrition-related information from all relevant sectors of the community. The municipal mayor of Sibagat, Maria Liza L. Evangelista gave her message of appreciation and encouragement to the participants to actively participate and support the radio program. She also emphasized the relevance of community radio as one of the means to convey information and education on matters concerning nutrition. After the training-workshop the participants elected the members of Community Radio Council (CRC) committee.

Radyo Kabakhawan 97.7 DXNG, the nutriskwela radio station in del Carmen, Surigao del Norte is currently being trained from June 13-15, 2017, the radio station personnel, Community Radio Committee and new program anchors are the participants of the Refresher Training Course on Nutriskwela Community Radio.

RNET feedbacking after OBNS Evaluation of Ms. Lampad of Surigao del NorteThe National Nutrition Council-Caraga through the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) is currently conducting the annual search for the Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (ROBNS) for the evaluation period Calendar Year 2016.  Search for ROBNS is conducted yearly to identify Barangay Nutrition Scholar who has exemplary performance in coordinating and implementing the Barangay Nutrition Program which contributed to the improvement of the nutritional status of its constituents particularly the vulnerable groups like preschool children, school children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.  The evaluation shall cover assessment of skills of BNS in coordinating the Barangay Nutrition Program to various sectors at the grassroots level, efficiency in the delivery of nutrition services, initiatives in resource generation activities, skills in nutrition assessment, maintenance of updated records and timeliness of submission of nutrition reports, among others. The mechanics of the evaluation shall consist of desk review of Barangay Nutrition Documents and validation of preschool children nutritional status through weighing of children to determine the changes in their weight that leads to the improvement of their nutritional status specifically of underweight children.

The RNET already had visited the following OBNS: Ms.Madelyn Guillera of Cabadbaran City, Ms. Mareezhele Lampad of Socorro, Surigao del Norte, Ms. Mary Glory Gil of Surigao City and Ma. Magdalena Betita of Lanuza, Surigao del Sur. The OBNS from Tandag City, Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur, Butuan City and Agusan del Norte are still to be evaluated. The ROBNS contenders will also undergo a written examination on June 6, 2017 in Butuan City through a prescribed BNS questionnaire from NNC-Central Office which will be administered by the evaluators.

NiE Assessment 2017 February 27 – March 03, 2017 Surigao del Norte- NNC Caraga, together with the Department of Health Region XIII went  to the respective municipalities of Surigao del Norte and conducted Nutrition in Emergency Assessment and Counseling.  The activity intends to assess the nutritional status of the people in the community, especially those who belonged to the  most vulnerable groups such as infant, children, pregnant and lactating mothers.

 During the said activity, the team had a courtesy call with Mainit Vice Mayor Hon. Ramon Mondano, assisted by MNAO  Janeth Lucida, BNS and BHWs. The group then proceeded to the evacuation center of Quezon Elementary School,  where they conducted the nutrition assessment using the NINA tool. NNC Caraga, Department of Health Caraga and  Provincial Department of Health Office representatives went to the municipalities of Sison, San Francisco and Tagana-an  to conduct the NiE Assessment, IYCF counseling, giving of logistics such as Vitamin A supplementation and  Micronutrient Powders. The team also visited the Rural Health Units and was able to teach the BNS, BHWs, NDPs and  other health workers the importance of MUAC tapes and how to use them.

The NNC Caraga then attended the joint meeting with the Surigao City Health Office and Surigao del Norte Provincial Health Office for the planning, coordination and monitoring of the different area and communities affected. The issues identified are: the need for additional Micronutrient Powder and for the health workers to undergo trainings in IYCF and Nutrition in Emergency. Each cluster gave an update on their accomplishment and data gathered for consolidation and documentation.

no3 vargas rncl meeting 32017Last March 30, 2017 at Luciana Annex, Butuan City, the Regional Nutrition Cluster conducted the 1st quarterly meeting. To strengthen the organization, its duties and updates. The main objective of the meeting is to reiterate the participants on the overview of the Nutrition Cluster. The said meeting was facilitated by the National Nutrition Council Caraga together with DOH Caraga Nutrition Coordinator, Teresita Lina Medrano.

NO III Vargas gave an overview of the Nutrition Cluster, she also reiterated the importance of IYCF and the role of RNC members on strengthening the program at their level.  NO II Sablas and NO I Atienza discussed the Nutrition Initial Needs Assessment (NINA) and the Guidelines on conducting Nutrition in Emergency Assessment to provide users common understanding on the tool and also NO III Vargas oriented the participants on how to use and fill up the 3 pages NINA tool.

Ms Medrano presented the Nutrition in Emergency (NiE) assessment report done last Feb 27-March 3,2017 at Surigao del Norte, it is collaboration activity with NNC Caraga technical group to assess nutritional status of the affected area during the recent calamity especially the most vulnerable group. Only one evacuation was identified in the area which is in the Municipality of Mainit specifically at Quezon elementary school. Ms. Medrano also highlighted that during their meeting at Surigao City Health Office and Surigao del Norte Provincial Office, Nutrition cluster is not available to give immediate support to the affected areas. Thus, there is a need to organize a Regional Nutrition Cluster for Emergency.

NO III Vargas, presented the status of the Capacity Mapping, ND IV Medrano also conducted equipment inventory and presented her data on the logistics provided by DOH to the LGU’s

Agreement was made among with the members to strengthen the Regional Nutrition Cluster. Next meeting, the cluster will conduct planning of activities to facilitate on providing aid specially during calamities.

 

 

kaagapay parade anniversary31 January 2017, Sibagat, Agusan del Sur - NNC Caraga joined the celebration of DXCN-FM 99.1 MHz - Radyo Kaagapay’s 7th Founding Anniversary held at the Municipal Hall of Sibagat. The Nutriskwela Community Radio is a Project of the National Nutrition Council to address the problem of hunger and malnutrition in the Philippines by providing correct and updated nutrition and health information to areas with high prevalence of malnutrition and no access to broadcast media. It was implemented in 2008, and Radyo Kaagapay in Sibagat, Agusan del Sur was its pioneering recipient in Caraga. The Celebration started with a motorcade around the municipality, participated by the members of Sibagat Nutrition Committee, Senior Citizens and the Sibagatnon.

Former Mayor and now, Sibagat Administrative Officer, Dr. Thelma Lamanilao is one of the guest speakers of the celebration. She’s one of the people behind the success of Radyo Kaagapay with her constant support from the very beginning to the Nutrition Program and Nutriskwela Radyo Kaagapay. She cited how the DXCN 99.1 Radyo Kaagapay was established in their municipality. The induction of the newly elected Community Radio Council (CRC) Officers was done during the Anniversary celebration, followed by Pledge of Commitment of the officers. NO III Leah Vina P. Vargas gave her message of gratitude to LGU-Sibagat and CRC members and staff of DXCN 99.1 - Radyo Kaagapay for their efforts to sustain the functionality of the nutriskwela station which also contributed to the decreased of malnutrition rate of preschool children from 17% in 2008 to 5% in 2015 by providing current and correct information. Municipal Mayor Maria Liza L. Evangelista shared her thoughts on the importance of the nutriskwela radio to her constituents and neighboring municipalities on the advancement of their knowledge in the field of Nutrition and Health. She firmly believes that a healthy family can contribute to a healthy community that will eventually lead to a much healthier nation. She also challenged the CRC officers to maximize the programs in serving the community and do more to improve the performance of Radyo Kaagapay. Mr. Alberto Latras, the new Chairman accepted Mayor Evangelista’s challenge and asked the listeners for their continuous support and to apply the knowledge they get from the different radio programs. He also acknowledged Dr. Lamanilao for signing the Memorandum of Agreement between NNC and LGU-Sibagat on the establishment of Radio Kaagapay seven years ago.

Before the celebration ended, one way of showing their appreciation to the listeners, DXCN 99.1 Radyo Kaagapay and Local Government Unit of Sibagat distributed AC/DC radios, umbrellas and giveaways to the participants.

Intl Womens Day 2017The National Nutrition Council, together with the LGUs of Butuan City, different Government agencies and Non-Government Organizations were united in the observance of the International Women’s Day last March 08, 2017. It is a global day celebration for the social, economic, cultural, political achievements of women. This day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

The first part of the said event was a Mass held at Saint Joseph Cathedral, then followed by a Motorcade from Guingona Park to Agusan del Norte Provincial Capitol Covered Court, where the second part of the program was held.

At the said venue, the environment was festive and filled with energy of the people that attended the activity. The emcee acknowledged the participants by having a roll call of each agency which was present during the event. The guest speaker, Hon. Rema E. Burdeos talked about empowering women to pursue their passion, for the sake of their family, community and the whole nation. With the theme “WE Make Change Work for Women”, she also addressed the issue of strengthening the implementation of the Magna Carta of Women at all levels.

The affair was capped by the “Rationale of the One Billion Rising” campaign aimed to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence against women will be resisted until it’s unthinkable. It was demonstrated with a dance “Break the Chain” where all the participants grooved to express joy and celebrate the fact that they have not been defeated by this violence.
