BUTUAN CITY- After a long year of being a barangay nutrition scholar (BNS), this is our first to be oriented with our roles and functions as BNS, shared by a BNS in Taganaan during the meeting and orientation of the BNSs with the National Nutrition Council Caraga on 8 November 2022 at the Municipal Conference, Municipal Building, Taganaan, Surigao del Norte.
The BNSs in 14 barangays of Taganaan are now under the supervision of the Rural Health Unit with a designated Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) after it was under the Office of Municipal Social Welfare and Development.
NNC Caraga Officer-in-Charge, Dr. Nino Archie S. Labordo provided the background and legal mandate of the BNS under the Barangay Nutrition Scholar Program of the Presidential Decree 1569.
The trained community worker has to provide basic nutrition and related heath-related services in the barangay as provided in the law.

BUTUAN CITY- The National Nutrition Council Caraga served as special guests during the First Sangguniang Bayan Council Session of the Municipality of Taganaan Council on 8 November 2022 at the SB Session Hall of this town.
Officer-in-Charge, Dr. Niño Archie Labordo shared the topic on Nutrition Governance, emphasizing the functionality of the Municipal Nutrition Committee, including the need to invest in nutrition.
DILG Memo Circular 2015-19 provides for the use of Local Nutrition Committee (LNC) Functionality Checklist to identify LGUs that are functional or non-functional.
In the checklist, the key activities or core indicators on which LNC would function are: (1) capacity development for members and barangay nutrition scholars; (2) program planning; (3) delivery of nutrition services; and (4) monitoring and evaluation.

Butuan City – The Municipality of Esperanza convened their Municipal Nutrition Committee to polishes the Local Nutrition Action Plan of the municipality for 2023-2023 at ABC Building, Esperanza, Agusan del Sur on November 8-10, 2022.
The activity was graced by the Municipal Mayor, Hon. Deo Manpatilan and the Former-Mayor and current Municipal Administrator, Ms. Leonida Manpatilan and expressed their support in scaling up nutrition interventions for an improved nutrition situation in the municipality.
In the workshop, the different Committee members provided inputs that could contribute to the delivery of positive nutrition outcome. Some of the inputs included in the plan are the distribution of Egg-Laying Chicken to families with malnourished children from Municipal Agriculture Office, skills training and skills enhancement training to parents of malnourished children from Municipal Cooperative Development Office and extensive monitoring and supplementary feeding of wasted school children from DepEd-Esperanza.

Butuan City –Recognizing the noble act of volunteerism, the National Voluntary Blood Services Program (NVBSP) of the Department of Health Caraga conducted its Donor Retention and Care Wellness Advocacy Forum on 2 December 2022 at Balanghai Hotel, Butuan City.
Regional Director Cesar C. Cassion of DOH-CHD Caraga delivered the welcome message. In his message, RD Cassion commended the participants for their exemplary act of service through volunteering in helping at-risk individuals who are in need of their safe donated blood.
Included in the highlights of the forum is the advocacy of proper nutrition and tips to ensure healthy donations, which was shared by the National Nutrition Council Caraga, DMO II Marie Angelie S. Fernandez.

Butuan City – As a means of providing the Local Nutrition Committees (LNCs) with an integrated, synchronized, coordinated and focused actions for nutrition improvement, a reorientation on Nutrition Program Management and Local Nutrition Action Planning Formulation was conducted on October 24-28, 2022 at Provincial Learning Center, Provincial Capitol, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.
The five-day activity was attended by the nutrition planning core group of eleven Local Government Units (LGUs) and the Provincial Nutrition Committee of Agusan del Sur.
Dr. Jacqueline Frances Momville, Provincial Health Officer II of Agusan del Sur, formally opened the program and welcomed the participants. She recognized the importance of planning in advance for interventions addressing the current nutrition problems in the province.

Butuan City – The Municipality of La Paz conducted its three-day training on Maternal, Infant and Young Children Nutrition to organize Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) support groups on November 15-17, 2022 at Farmer’s Training Center, Demofarm, La Paz, Agusan del Sur.
The training was conducted to equip various volunteers, especially those who have constant contact with pregnant women and lactating mothers, on the recommended maternal nutrition, breastfeeding, and complementary feeding practices for children.
It also aims to support mothers, fathers and other caregivers to optimally feed infants and young children.
Moreover, a return demonstration on IYCF counseling was conducted at the end of the training to complement the theories and concepts discussed in the duration of the training.
