DO Plaza April 8 2022BUTUAN CITY – National Nutrition Council (NNC) Caraga reached out to two hospitals of Agusan del Sur on April 8, 2022 as part of its strategy to advocate nutrition and nutrition-related programs in the hospitals, centers and facilities.

Administrative Officer, Mr. Ronnie Torralba of Talacogon District Hospital located at San Isidro, Talacogon, Agusan del Sur welcomed OIC-RNPC Dr. Niño Archie Labordo and NNC Caraga staff. The visit included discussion on the admission of children with severe acute malnutrition and the functionality of dietary services present in the hospital.

The team also visited the provincial hospital, D.O Plaza Memorial Hospital situated at Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur. The team was received by Chief Nurse Cecilia D. Labella and discussed the establishment of the lactation station, monitoring of admitted malnourished children and the application of the mother-baby-friendly facility with OIC-RNPC Labordo and Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Laniebelle Angchangco.

LNEWS Sna Franz April 4 2022Prosperidad, ADS--Core group of the Local Nutrition Early Warning System (LNEWS) together with the representatives of the five sentinel barangays, Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) Charlaine Ayessa Rubillos and the Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) Laniebelle Angchangco set out plans to increase the food security and diet diversity of each household in the Municipality of San Francisco, Agusan del Sur.

The presentation of the LNEWS results paved way to the interactive discussion among officers involved to improve the results of the next monitoring.

MNAO Rubillos recommended to strengthen the implementation of household backyard gardening with at least five different kinds of vegetables and to continue the advocacy on the importance of first 1000 days.

MSWD Officer Ms. Edendita Batiao proposed that aside from household backyard gardening, the communal garden should be strengthened as well. She also added the mobilization of Bantay-Asin Task Force (BATF) in the municipal and barangay level.

Barangay Kagawad of one sentinel barangays shared that their communal gardens were demolished for road widening project. Currently, they are still looking for a new location to put up a communal garden.

EPAHP 1ST MEETING2022Butuan City--The Enhanced Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (EPAHP) Regional Convergence Team (RCT) gathered its partner agencies, including National Nutrition Council (NNC) Caraga, for its first quarter meeting on 31 March 2022 at The Pavilion, Watergate Boutique Hotel, Butuan City.

The meeting aims to further strengthen the collaboration between EPAHP partner agencies, evaluate all the EPAHP-related activities implemented in the year 2021 and to identify and address issues and plan including the deliverables and calendar of activities for CY 2022.

Partner agencies of EPAHP are divided into three: the supply partners, support partners and demand partners. Each partner agency participated in the planning and presented EPAHP-related interventions for 2022.

The support partners such as the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and Department of Agriculture (DA) commit to provide farm production inputs, equipment and facilities. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) commit to provide capacity-building training programs for entrepreneurship. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) commits to assist and provide food processing facilities and equipment. The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) commit to provide skills training and capacity development. The National Irrigation Association (NIA) commit to rehabilitate, construct and improve irrigation facilities. The Landbank of the Philippines (LBP) commit to support food production, processing and marketing through credit and loan assistance.

Pilar lecture by the beachSIARGAO ISLAND – Information Management Officer (IMO) Annievil del Pilar together with the Regional Nutrition Cluster Coordinator, Ms. Kristine Angeli Gimongala facilitated a series of Philippine Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (PIMAM) Crash Course to Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAOs), Rural Health Unit (RHU) Staff and barangay nutrition scholars (BNSs) in the municipalities of Dapa, Santa Monica, San Benito, and Pilar last March 28-31, 2022.

During the training, the need for the proper conduct of nutrition assessment using different anthropometric tools was emphasized. Nutrition interventions and Infant and young child feeding in emergencies were also highlighted. It was the first time to a lot of the participants to see or use the Mid-upper arm circumference tapes as a tool for determining acute malnutrition in both children 6-59 months old and pregnant and lactating women. A return demonstration of proper mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) taking, proper use of child growth standards (CGS) tables was done.

Tandag Healthy Plipinas 2022Butuan City--- Kinabuhi sa Isa ka Libong Adlaw (K-ISA)- a first 1,000 days program package implemented in the City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur, bagged the first-ever Healthy Pilipinas Awards for Healthy Communities 2022 announced by the Department of Health (DOH) virtually on March 04, 2022

Under the Priority Area 1 Nutrition and Physical Activity, the K-ISA program focuses on the delivery of quality nutrition and health services in the first 1,000 days of life to all 21 barangays of Tandag City.

Through Executive Order 053 signed by City Mayor Roxanne Pimentel, the program promotes multi-sectoral efforts among the different stakeholders, particularly the members of the City Nutrition Committee, in providing a whole-package approach in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life.

The first 1000 days, also referred to as the “golden window of opportunity”, span from conception of the child up to the child’s second birthday. It is the period where child’s full potential in the different aspects of development can be achieved.

Pilar Australia visit April 2022Butuan City- Team from the Australian Government - Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) visited Caraga region particularly the typhoon Odette hit areas of Siargao and Dinagat Islands on 5-6 April 2022.

The visit headed by Mr. Thanh Le, Counselor for Development monitored the response activities of the different aides shared by developmental partners, particularly on the Reproductive Health Medical Mission (RHMM) and the established Emergency Maternity Tent Facility (EMFT) in Barangay Pilaring, Pilar, Surigao del Norte.

The RHMM aims to bring access to reproductive health care and education to the community and share medical care and concerns and information.

Maternal and child packages, including nutrition interventions are integrated in the program which ensures better well being of the mother and the child.

On the other hand, the EMTF is used as an alternative, temporary medical point of care in communities where facilities have been non-functional and where maternal and child interventions are still needed.
