region 9 bns trainingTwenty one Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) in Zamboanga Del Norte were trained on the basic course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars on April 20-22, 2016 at Dapitan City. The training was sponsored and funded by the Child Fund International (CFI) a non-government organization that expanded its services to the municipalities of Gulatac and Leon B. Postigo, Zamboanga del Norte through the “Child Rights and Education Access Towards Early Childhood Development” CREATE-CD Project.

According to its Project Coordinator Mr. Denis Vanguardia, CREATE-CD is part of CFI’s community level interventions which also addresses problems of malnutrition. The collaboration between the CFI & NNC IX in the BNS training capacitated the indigenous nutrition workers  in the performance of their volunteer work. He added that this intervention will also lead to improved nutrition program management at the barangay level.  NNC IX provided technical, material and human resources in training the 21 newly deployed and existing Barangay Nutrition Scholars in the two municipalities.

NNC Nutrition Officer III Ms. Nimfa D. Ekong who served as trainer-facilitator, provided the basic skills to BNS in analyzing the nutrition situation, assessing nutritional status of children and counselling mothers on nutrition care of children as well.

Aside from funding the BNS training, the CFI also committed to provide the 21 BNS with height boards and salter weighing scales and materials for the construction of spot maps to help them develop a reliable data base in identifying and designing appropriate interventions for nutrition improvement in their communities.
