The National Nutrition Council Regional Office IX conducted a FNS-EWS orientation-consultative workshop on 14-15 July, 2016 at Paradise Resort, Kumalarang, Zamboanga del Sur.
The municipality of Kumalarang in the province of Zamboanga del Sur was identified as a project area with its prevalence of 13.23% among the underweight preschool children and ranked 10th in the region per OPT result of 2015. The area is also prone to natural disasters and calamities affecting food and nutrition security.
The activity was attended by heads of offices from different sectors like health, social services, agriculture, education, local disaster risk reduction management, peoples’ organization, ABC President, federated presidents of Barangay Nutrition Scholars and Barangay Health Workers. Also present in this activity were representative from the Sangguniang Bayan, the Provincial Nutrition Action Officer of Zamboanga del Sur and the Municipal Nutrition Action Officer of kumalarang, Zamboanga del Sur.
After the one and a half day consultation workshop the organized Local FNS-EWS Core Groupchaired by Mayor Eugene Salva and vicechaired by the Municipal Planning andDevelopment Officer were able to come up with a Food and Nutrition Causality Framework based on the inputs of each member. Likewise, the group was able to identify the five sentinel barangays based on the set criteria. The group identified the following barangays Poblacion, Boyugan West, Picanan, Bogayo and Gawil as the five sentinel barangays.
