RO9 Sight Saving MonthPursuant to Proclamation No. 40, yearly, every month of August is celebrated as the National Sight Saving Month in the Philippines. This celebration aims to spread public awareness on the importance of proper eye care to prevent eye diseases and to encourage the nation to be aware of the available means in restoring the lost eyesight and the value of organ donation.

Among the five senses that a human being has, so far the most important organs are the eyes. About 80% of what a person perceives comes from the sense of sight. It is also believed that, if other senses such as the sense of taste or smell stop working, it’s your eyes that will best protect you from danger. Your eyes, similar to the other parts of your body, are also subject to stress and injury and might possibly lose their ability if not properly taken cared of. By protecting your eyes, you will reduce the chance of having vision loss and other developing eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma.

It is important to maintain the health of your eyes even as you grow older. Healthy eyes are vital in learning and experiencing growth and development. In the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) is pursuing its mandate to ensure that the poor, indigent and marginalized people will have access to affordable and quality eye care through the National Prevention of Blindness Program with a vision of all Filipinos to enjoy the right to sight by year 2020.

As an individual, there are also ways to protect our eyes from harm such as leading a healthy lifestyle through exercising and consuming proper nutrition like eating a well-balanced diet that are rich in nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E that can be found on green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, fish, eggs and other nonmeat protein sources to help keep the eyes functioning properly into later years.

Don’t wait for the time to experience eye problems before you start thinking about your eye health. Keeping them healthy while you are still young will help you prepare when the transition of your eyes begin as you grow older. A good vision contributes to your overall happiness and well-being. Start putting attention to your eye health and save your sight so that you will be assured that your future will be colorful and full of life.
