Bohol, Philippines – The day before typhoon Odette made its landfall in the province, the Provincial Government of Bohol through the Provincial Health Office and the Bohol Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) Association held the 18th Annual Provincial BNS Summit on 15 December 2021 via Zoom and FB Livestream.
Anchored on the theme, “BNS Padayon, Malnutrisyon Sugpoon, Pandemya Sagubangon!”, the summit aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of BNSs for them to continue delivering quality nutrition-related services whilst facing COVID-19 threat. It was attended by1,116 BNSs of the 1,117 or 99% BNSs provincewide.
The BNS program is a human resource development strategy of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition which recruits, trains, deploys, and supervises volunteer workers in the barangay. They are tasked to deliver nutrition and nutrition-related services to the barangay by caring for the malnourished and the nutritionally vulnerable, mobilizing the community, and linkage building. As part of their incentives, they are provided with minimal travelling allowance, survivorship and medical assistance and can avail of first level Civil Service Commission (CSC) eligibility.
Topics discussed during the summit included Barangay Nutrition Action Plan (BNAP) formulation, Devolution Transition Plan and the Mandanas-Garcia Supreme Court ruling, BNS records and BNS benefits.
Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Dr. Larry M. Pamugas, Atty. Abeleon R. Damalerio from the Office of 1st District Congressman, and NNC 7 ND II Ms. Suzette Jade M. Salado, and Regional Nutrition Coordinator Dr. Parolita Mission served as the resource persons during the summit.
