As part of its capacity development program, the National Nutrition Council Region 8 spearheaded a 5-day Training of Trainers on the Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) last October 6-10, 2014 at Pongos Hotel, Ormoc City.
The training aims to strengthen the capacity of supervisors and trainers of BNSs in mentoring, supervising, and training BNSs. As a result of the training, participants will be able to conduct trainings for the existing and new BNSs to be able to assist in the delivery of nutrition and related services as well as help in mobilizing the barangay nutrition committees to implement their respective barangay nutrition action plans to address malnutrition and hunger.
There were about 26 participants to this training composed of Nutrition Action Officers and District Nutrition Program Coordinators from the provinces of Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Northern Samar, Samar and Eastern Samar.
The training involved interactive workshops like role playing for enhancing communication and advocacy skills, spot mapping, art activities and group reporting for improving their presentation, organizing and coordinating skills.
Participants had productive learning sessions from the speakers, Dr. Catalino P. Dotollo, Jr. Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, Ms. Rina Ladrera, Nutrition Officer II and Ms. Alva Gadin, Provincial Nutrition Action Officer. They captured insights of the real nutrition situations in barangays and the challenges encountered in addressing the hunger and malnutrition problem. (Jhekie G. Cinco)
