adra1BARAS, Palo, Leyte -- Seven non-government organizations (NGOs)  engaged in nutrition interventions in Eastern Visayas responded to the challenge of National Nutrition Council Region 8 (NNC-8) Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Dr. Catalino P. Dotollo Jr. to "bite a chunk" of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2017-2022 (PPAN-2017-2022) and contribute to the realization of its objectives.

The NGOs nutrition-engagement in the region were presented after a review of the State of Nutrition in the region and a Planning Workshop on the Regional Implementation of PPAN 2017-2022:

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), bared it is implementing a nutrition specific MASIGLAHI or Maayos na Nutrisyon para sa Masiglang Lahi covering 32 villages of Bato, Leyte with its target group of -- acute and malnourished children in first 1000 days;

The Zuellig Family Foundation, is implementing an enabling program with Leadership and Governance in Nutrition for the 1st 1000 days in the municipality of Gamay, Northern Samar targeting -- households, community and municipal leaders;

 The Samaritan’s Purse, is implementing a nutrition specific “Scale-up Nutrition Tacloban” that is providing trainings to health providers within the community while also promoting biblical family values to parents and caregivers in the city of Tacloban and the town of Palo, Leyte. Its target group are -- BNSs/community caregivers, pregnant and lactating women;

The Childcare Communities Ministries Philippines, is implementing a nutrition specific Feeding Program covering the villages of Turaga (Palo, Leyte), Caray-Caray (Naval, Biliran), and Talustusan (Naval, Biliran);

The Diocesan Social Action Center of Maasin City, is implementing a nutrition specific HAPAG-ASA Program covering Maasin City with target groups -- 0 to 12 years old undernourished children and lactating mothers;

The Rotary Club of Calbayog City, is implementing a nutrition specific Supplementary Feeding Program covering Brgy. Dagum of Calbayog City targeting -- Moderately Acute Malnourished (MAM) children;

And the Edmund Rice Ministries Foundation, is implementing a nutrition specific Development Supplemental Feeding covering the villages of Castilla, Anawahag and Teraza of Palo town, Dung-an, and San Isidro in Hilongos, Taylam in Matalom all in Leyte; Hinapu-Gamay, Pinaskohan, Noknok in Maasin City and Sindangan in Macrohon, Southern Leyte targeting -- poorest undernourished children.
