To kick-off and celebrate the start of Nutrition Month, a Parade and Launching program was held in Tacloban City on July 1, 2014. This year’s Nutrition Month theme "Kalamidad Paghandaan: Gutom at Malnutrisyon agapan!" aims to increase awareness of the importance of Nutrition in Emergencies (NiE). Despite the rainy weather and the early hour, the parade was well attended by local organizations and the humanitarian community.
The Provincial Governor Hon. Leopoldo Dominico L. Petilla personally graced the event with him sharing his experiences growing up and how it has shaped his advocacy for a sustainable nutrition initiative in the province. Together with the office of the PNAO, the Province of Leyte emphasized its commitment to uphold and advocate for good health and nutrition in the province. The City of Tacloban through City Nutrition Action Officer (CNAO) Ms. Ma. Lumen Tabao welcomed the participants to the event and thanked the different organizations, which are providing nutrition services in the City. Ms. Briony Stevens, the Nutrition Cluster Coordinator of UNICEF, highlighted the importance of sustaining the momentum of nutrition activities post Yolanda.
A ceremonial signing of the Pledge of Commitment by the Provincial Government, Provincial Nutrition Office, City Government of Tacloban, Department of Health, National Nutrition Council, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Education, Department of Labor and Employment, National Economic and Development Authority,DOST-FNRI,Rotary Club of Kandaya, Philippine National Police, Eastern Visayas State University, Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars, Harmonized Initiatives of Media for the Spread of Good Nutrition in Region 8(HIMSoG-8), UNICEF, ACF, Save the Children, International Medical Corps, Bukidnon Resource Management Foundation, World Vision,Samaritan’s Purse, and Plan International capped the launching program.
