rnac 2018 1Palo, Leyte – For the third year in-a-row the municipality of Caibiran in the island province of Biliran bagged the highest regional citation on nutrition, reaping the Green Banner Award as Regional Outstanding Municipality in tandem for its fourth year as Provincial Outstanding Municipality in Biliran Province which further elated the municipality to be awarded as one of the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner Nutrition (CROWN) Awardee, awarded by National Nutrition Council (NNC) at the Philippine International Convention Center In Pasay City, Metro Manila. Another Provincial Green Banner Awardee this year is the town of Hinunangan of the province of Southern Leyte.

These are the top local government units (LGUs) in Eastern Visayas recognized for their outstanding performance in implementation of nutrition action plans in year 2017. They were bestowed the due honours in a Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) held on November 27, 2018 at The Oriental Hotel, Palo, Leyte.

koika2TACLOBAN CITY - Aimed at reducing the prevalence of stunting among children is the project goal of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) new project for Eastern Visayas’ integrated nutrition and Health Actions in the First 1,000 Days of Life: Improving lives of vulnerable children and women in Samar and Northern Samar.

The project started its consultative meet ups with the local government units and conducted planning workshops to understand the program on early childhood care development (ECCD) in the first 1000 days, project implementation and responsibilities, terms and reference and timelines of the project.

bns confabPALO, Leyte – More than 2,000 front liners nutrition advocates, well known as Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs), around Eastern Visayas region gathered at the Leyte Academic Center (LAC) on 10-11 October 2018 for the 4th Regional Conference of Barangay Nutrition Scholars, flying the theme: “BNS: Bayani ng Nutrisyon, Noon, Ngayon at Bukas!”

Initiated by the Eastern Visayas Association of Barangay Nutrition Scholars, Incorporated (EVA-BNS, Inc.) through its officers headed by President Lydia Nuñez, in coordination with the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region VIII—through the leadership of Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Dr. Catalino P. Dotollo Jr., the two-day event that sought to level-up the status of nutrition workers at the grassroots staged several events--from updates in the nutrition sector to personal development of the BNSs.

Leyte Gov. Leopoldo Dominico “Mic” L. Petilla was the guest of honor, who during his inspirational talk connected malnutrition situation with poverty, so that in the province of Leyte he revealed that his administration is doing its best to lessen, if not eradicate the prevalence of both.

HIMSOG TAME2TACLOBAN CITY – The Harmonized Initiatives of Media for the Spread of Good Nutrition in Region 8 (HIMSoG-8), has joined the National Technical Assistance Monitoring and Evaluation (TAME) Team and representative from private evaluator Info-Share during its last salvo of Media-Nutrition Caravan for year 2018 to the Accelerated and Sustainable Anti-Poverty Program (ASAPP) areas of Baybay City and Mahaplag town of Leyte province on October 24-25, this year.

ASAPP, a central government program that aims to accelerate poverty reduction by boosting economic growth in localities through public-private interventions, is being piloted in selected cities and municipalities in 10 provinces nationwide, classified as Category 1 in the Updated Philippine Development Plan 2011-2016. In Eastern Visayas this includes the three towns and one city of Leyte namely: Abuyog, Mahaplag, Hilongos and Baybay City.

ppanbnsPALO, Leyte – The Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022 is the battle plan against malnutrition in the country, to eradicate or bring down malnutrition incidence particularly stunting (short for age), wasting (thin for age), underweight (light for age), overweight and obesity, micronutrient deficiencies, and hunger and food insecurity by year 2022.

Dr. Catalino P. Dotollo Jr., Regional Nutrition Program coordinator of National Nutrition Council Region VIII (NNC-8), explained this in a lecture entitled “PPAN 2017-2022 and the Barangay Nutrition Scholars during the 4th Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) Regional Conference held on 10-11 October 2018 at the Leyte Academic Center, here.

sarwelPALO, Leyte -- Implementation of the program meant to ensure proper nourishment within the child’s first 1,000 days of life is now under review in four pilot areas in Leyte province.

A team from the National Nutrition Council (NNC) arrived on Tuesday for the week-long review of the Early Childhood Care and Development First 1,000 Days (ECCD-F1K) program launched in 2016 and fully implemented this year.

“The evaluation and monitoring team wanted to track activities based on work and financial plan, initial impacts of the program, and see the need to replicate or expand the program in other provinces since currently there are only 10 pilot provinces in the country,” said NNC regional program coordinator Catalino Dotollo in an interview Thursday.

In Leyte, the initiative is being carried out in Baybay City, Hilongos, Mahaplag, and Abuyog towns. Among six provinces in Region 8 (Eastern Visayas), only Leyte has pilot areas for this intervention.
